- <p> DIED. ERIK ERIKSON, 91, psychoanalyst and author; in Harwich,
- Massachusetts. Erikson was a disciple of Sigmund Freud's--but where Freud emphasized sex as a shaper of personality, Erikson
- focused on social interactions. Such writings as his 1950 classic
- Childhood and Society identified discrete psychological stages
- in a human life. His concept of the "identity crisis," a key
- problem of adolescence, entered the popular vocabulary. Erikson
- wrote a number of heavily psychological biographies of such
- seminal historical figures as Jesus, Einstein, and Darwin. His
- Gandhi's Truth won a Pulitzer Prize in 1970.
